Purpose for Reading Interactive Activity. The main focus of this activity is to have students understand the importance of having a purpose established beforehand for reading. Students will hopefully understand that having a purpose will allow them to focus on the important information. This is especially the case with informational text.
For this activity, students will read the same text (Marley’s General Store & Parlor handout) but reflect in a different way based on their purpose for reading.
Marley’s General Store & Parlor Activity:
-Make sure each student has a copy of the “Marley’s General Store & Parlor” handout.
-You will also want to print off enough copies of the “Marley’s General Store & Parlor Purpose Cards” so that each student has one. These cards will provide your students with two different purposes for reading:
-Break the class up into groups of 4-5.
-After the groups are established, inform the students that you will be passing out (face down) the Marley’s General Store & Parlor Purpose Cards to each of the groups. Make sure that each group receives both of the different purposes. Once each student has a card, have them carefully read what is on the card and to not show any other group member.
-Inform the students that what is on the card will be their “purpose” when reading the “Marley’s General Store & Parlor” handout. There are two purposes
-While reading, have students underline the most relevant information for their purpose.
-After reading, have students discuss and share what they believe to be the most relevant information. Obviously, there will be drastic differences with the responses.
-When the discussion is over, have students share what their purpose for reading was.
-Have a class discussion about what they thought was relevant. An answer key is also provided for you if needed.
