This lesson plan teaches students about the components of a short story's setting. The lesson focuses on Edgar Allan Poe's short story, "The Cask of Amontillado" and the two settings he creates for his characters. Students will be lead to connect their prior knowledge of settings in their every-day lives with the settings created in literature. Students will have an opportunity to write about a familiar setting before organizing the components of Poe's setting on a graphic organizer. Finally, students will be engaged while having the opportunity to sketch the setting they imagine while reading Poe's description of his setting in the story.
