To become familiar with some of the problems and dangers faced by settlers crossing the Atlantic Ocean during the 1600s.
1 and 1/2 class periods
Class members will read a story about what it was like for people in Europe to cross the Atlantic Ocean and settle in America during the 1600s.
Once the story has been read, have each student pretend that they were on one of the ships that crossed the Atlantic at that time. They will explain what it was like to cross the ocean on a crowded ship that included their family and 100 other settlers from England. They will describe some of the things that happened during the voyage. What did their family do after arriving in America?
The story that each student writes should have 150 or more words, and should include some of the things that were mentioned in the background information in the first five paragraphs that were read at the beginning of this lesson.
Teacher Instructions are included.
