This is a fun "Settlers of Catan"-inspired game that will engage your students as they learn about the 4 Regions of California (Central Valley, Coastal, Desert, and Mountain). Your students will become "settlers" looking to collect resources from the different regions. Using these resources, they will race to build the most populated locations around California. The populations of their locations depend on which regions they are in. In addition, they can build "improvements" to help attract larger populations. For example, cities in the Desert Region can be improved with the addition of irrigation and aqueducts. Cities in the Coastal Region can add transportation such as buses and trains. The winner at the end is the team with the most Population Points!
This game can be played whole group over several days or weeks depending on how frequently you use it (play a few turns a day or dedicate a "California Day" and play!). You can also print out multiple games and have your class play in small groups.
This game on its own CANNOT be used to teach students about the 4 Regions of California. This should be used to supplement and enhance your social studies lessons for California history.
This download includes everything you need to play except for dice. 8 dice would be best, but it can easily work with just one. Detailed instructions are included, but please don't hesitate to ask questions or clarifications on this product page. Print out the pages, get friendly with a paper cutter, and have fun!
