**This is an Explanatory / Expository Essay Prompt**

**“Literature Based Writing Prompt – Seventh Grade Prompt 2”** - In the short story “Seventh Grade” by Gary Soto, Victor decides he wants Teresa to be his girlfriend. He even signs up for French class because he knows she is taking it. When Teresa says hi to Victor in homeroom, he becomes flustered and blurts out a comment that sounds rude. He wonders why he couldn’t think of something nice to say. In English class, Victor embarrasses himself when he gives Teresa’s name as an example of a noun. Then in French class, he pretends he knows the French language in hopes of impressing Teresa. When the teacher asks him a question in French, he is forced to improvise with nonsense words. The teacher does not react or try to embarrass the boy. After class, Teresa praises Victor for his fluency. Victor ends the day with the feeling that he will like seventh grade and a resolve to really learn French. We have all experienced being nervous about something the first day of school. Think about something that has made you nervous on the first day of school. Write to explain what made you nervous and why.
