Suggested lesson progression:

Engage: Show students an interesting animal and have them think/pair/share the traits of the animal or show students a YouTube video of unique organism and have them share previous knowledge of the organism.

Explore: Give students the three pages of vocabulary match cards (I laminate and cut mine). Students can play a game like spoons or race to be the fastest to match all terms, definitions and examples.

Explain: Present student notes either as a whole group, or by having students read through the note pages in small groups. Shrink student note pages to 79% and they will fit into a standard sized composition book.

Explain: Working either individually or in small groups, have students complete the two work pages.

Elaborate: Students showing a high level of success can complete the three student driven sheets as an assessment piece. Students needing more practice can work either individually, or in small groups to practice their skills.

Evaluate: Students who have not already demonstrated mastery can be given the final evaluation page.

Standards and Objectives:
This lesson addresses the following vocabulary: genotype, phenotype, trait, dominant, recessive, homozygous, heterozygous, and Punnett square.

Student skills: use of Punnett squares, identifying traits as either dominant or recessive, identifying phenotype and genotype given either or a picture and a key, predicting offspring traits given the phenotype of the parents.
