This tool is designed to help expand a student's word knowledge for emotional vocabulary from just "happy, sad, mad" to more specific terminology that may help them to not only better express themselves, but to problem solve appropriate responses to these emotions. There are 18 emotions on the "unhappy" side and 18 emotions on the "happy" side. This scale shows the progression of emotion from least to most intense. I like to explain to students that it is sort of like the volume button on the TV... the bottom emotions are pretty calm and easy, but they get very intense as you go along. After teaching each word, I like to use this chart as I describe various scenarios and have students to tell me how they would feel. Later, I would have them state how they feel and to tell me some strategies to move them down from more intense to more calm emotions.
