★ 3 sets of Word Cards and definitions for partner or small group work

How it Works
First use the Picture Cards to start a discussion about shades of meaning or nuance in words. Then use the Upward Arrow graphic organizer to show how words have an intensity of meanings even though they may be synonyms. Classroom discussion in the whole group, small group or partner pairings can help students determine the various shades of meaning of similar words (e.g. mad, angry, irate, furious, enraged).

Students can then practice with a set of Word Cards in partner or small group setting. They try to order the Word Cards by shades of meaning.

Then students can move on to independent work on the Practice Page which includes writing sentences. As a follow-up, students can make a Mini-Book independently or in a center.

Two other variations, the Stairs and Paint Strip have also been provided as alternate ways of visualizing shades of meaning.

Some of the pages come in color and black and white versions.
Practice pages are all in black and white.
There are also alternate practice pages without the border.
