This vocabulary resource includes 10 shades of meaning mats and 30 illustrated synonym word cards. Students will order the synonyms according to their shades of meaning as they follow the instructions on each mat. This activity makes a great literacy center for all students. The picture supports also make it ideal for students who speak English as a second language (ELL / ESL).
To prolong their use, I recommend laminating these cards or printing them on sturdy cardstock before cutting them apart along the solid lines.
You can make this resource self-checking by writing the synonyms in the correct order on the back of the mats or by numbering the backs of the cards. If you would like a written record of your students’ work, a recording sheet is included along with an answer key.

*CCS.1.L.5b: Distinguish shades of meaning among verbs differing in manner (e.g., look, peek, glance, glare, scowl) and closely related adjectives differing in intensity (e.g., large, gigantic) by defining or choosing between or by acting out the meanings
*CCS.2.L.5b: Distinguish shades of meaning among closely related verbs (e.g., toss, throw, hurl) and closely related adjectives (e.g., thin, slender, skinny, scrawny)
