Product Description
These Shades of Meaning: Nuances of Language Task Cards are Common Core aligned for 5th and 6th grades. This resource includes 32 task cards and focuses on the shades of meaning that exist between similar words. All of the task cards contain a multiple choice question, and each set of cards becomes increasingly difficult as your students become more proficient. This resource also includes an answer key, a student response sheet (2 sheets per page), and 24 Charades game cards.

Included in This Resource:
~32 Task Cards

*cards 1-8 have two answer choices
*cards 9-24 have three answer choices
*cards 25-32 have 4 answer choices
~2 blank Task Cards (students can create their own questions)
~a student response sheet
~an answer key
~24 Charades Game Cards

*In Charades, one student selects a card from the pile and acts out the word without speaking. The other students need to guess which word is being acted out! Using Charades creates differentiation for all students.
Some of the benefits of Charades are:
• allows student interactions
• high student engagement
• team building
I use this resource in multiple ways. I use it in small group for students who need more support. Students who don’t need as much support use it in a center, and I also play Scoot (whole group activity) with these cards. The Charades idea came from my brilliant students! My students loved acting out the nuances of the given words for a review! Your students will ask to play long after they have reached mastery!

Understanding nuances in language can help students…
* improve reading, writing, speaking, and listening comprehension skills
* build their vocabulary by learning new words and meanings
* develop an appreciation for word relationships, and nuances in word meanings
* This is an important language and social skill.

The task cards can be printed in color or grayscale and can be laminated and used again and again. Simply print and cut along the guidelines. It works well to keep them in a baggie. Another option is to hole-punch a corner of each card and put them all on a ring. The answer key is typed into 2 “task cards.” This makes it easy to leave in the center for self-checking and for task card storage.  Keep the answers with the task cards!
