There are multiple ways to use this shades of meaning activity!
There are 15 sets of word cards with and without numbers. There is also a blank set of cards to add your own words to. A recording sheet is also included.
The words are synonyms with varying degrees of intensity. Use as few or as many of the numbered sets as is appropriate for your students’ needs.
Literacy Centers/Word Work - Have the students categorize the words by meaning and then sort the words along the continuum ending with the strongest, most intense word.
Writing - Students can find “boring” words in their writing and use a thesaurus, along with a blank banner, to find more specific words to enhance their writing.
Whole Class/Group Activity - Choose one set of words at a time and allow students to discuss and determine the order in which they would sort the words along the continuum.
This activity is also available in a Christmas theme
