Common core aligned! L.1.5d
Shades of meaning has been a difficult concept for my students to grasp.. Well, until we did this activity for word work of course! It really helped students grasp that small is an okay word to use but petite has more power than just "small."
Students can do this activity independently or small group. Cut out each individual puzzle piece so students can put the puzzle strip back together. The base puzzle piece is the "weakest" word. As the puzzle goes from left to right the words become stronger or more powerful.
There are three options for a recording sheet. One is completely blank, one has the base puzzle words already filled in and the third sheet is blank and asks students to come up with their own shades of meaning for the pictures.
There are 8 puzzle strips for students to construct.
