This is a great project to do with your class. Students will learn to use triangulation to locate the epicenter of an earthquake using data from three stations. Included are 3 seismograph readings for 3 earthquakes along with the exact location of each earthquake. Students will be excited to see and read a basic seismograph. Your students will be using real time data and (like mine), your students will scream with excitement when they discover how accurate their results are. What an excellent way to bring real world application into the classroom. You will be able to reinforce an understanding of the arrival of P and S-waves. Students will also review map skills by having to plot data on a map. As a bonus, I have included instruction for making your own classroom seismometer. You students will love it!
