This resource was designed to be an easy to prep, easy to implement activity to help your students practice composing and decomposing five and ten. Students will need two sided counters (usually red and yellow or red and white) for this activity.

Each of the eight activities includes a recording sheet and corresponding “I Can” visual directions page.

Making five and ten are presented in three different ways. Download the preview to see each of the activities.

Simply print, cut, and laminate the activity mat you wish to use. Print the corresponding recording sheet and ”I Can” page. Students will gently spill the counters and create an equation equal to five or ten. They will color the recording sheet to record their work.

The last activities in this pack, beginning on page 20, are included as an optional challenge activity where students will create a subtraction sentence using the red and yellow counters.
