This is a PowerPoint presentation that walks students through the steps of completing an earthquake lab where students construct buildings of marshmallows and toothpicks to test on a jello earthquake. The last slide asks students to color thee tectonic plates different colors. You will need to provide the building materials, a lab report and a tectonic plate map.
For this experiment, you will need to provide the students with a lab report recording page to record their predictions and observations throughout the lab. Students will also need tooth picks and marshmallows to construct “buildings.” After constructing the buildings and making predictions, the students will then test their buildings out on a jello earthquake provided by the teacher (I use a disposable foil baking dish with jello “cut” with a toothpick to look like the cracks in the ground). After testing the buildings, students will record their observations about what happened and answer the other questions provided in the PowerPoint presentations. The last slide of this presentation asks the students to color the different tectonic plates different colors, so you will need to provide a tectonic plate map if you wish for your students to do this.
