Ophelia’s Perfect Picture is an engaging group project allowing students to competitively connect literary meaning using photography. Students will analyze assigned character traits through textual support and artwork, for example, the tormented Ophelia from Shakespeare’s Hamlet, and attempt to recreate the symbolism of her character through photographed images around the school site in a culminating photography competition.
This product includes a lesson plan overview and timeline, group textual analysis handouts by character, a 15-slide Powerpoint presentation on character representations throughout time (using Ophelia as the example), and the assignment sheet and grading rubric.
Honestly, it's a sneaky way to help students understand complex Shakespearean structure and meaning. Throw in a photo contest, and game on.
