A note-taking and response assignment for viewing a filmed version of any Shakespeare play. It asks students to specifically consider theme and self-determined big picture questions before watching the movie and follow through along with some other ideas specific to film analysis while they are watching.
A note: I usually show pieces of the films throughout the reading of the play, but save a viewing of the entire film for the end of our unit. During the unit, I make great use of the reading log assignment found in the Folger Library's Shakespeare Set Free series of teaching resource books. I've found it really helps students think about specific details. This assignment was designed to follow-up on some of those close reading details we had been tracking throughout the play, specifically about theme.
