This is a self-contained unit - it is ready to go for you or for a substitute teacher.

➢ IF YOUR STUDENTS ARE NOT USING COMPUTERS THEY MAY STILL DO THIS ASSIGNMENT. PRINT AND DISTRIBUTE OR USE WITH A SMART BOARD AND ENGAGE THE ENTIRE CLASS.

➢ Everything you’ll need to teach Shakespeare's speech is here, so it is ready to go for you or for a substitute teacher.

➢ Handouts - seven pages: a PDF copy of the speech and a PDF copy of the student content without the answer keys.

➢ Five pages of detailed teacher notes and an answer key.

➢ A YouTube clip taken from the 1989 film.

➢ 10 fill-in-the blank questions and answers (PDF and Google Slides)

➢ 10 words to define (PDF and Google Slides) with definitions in the answer key.

➢ Four textual analysis questions (PDF and Google Slides)

➢ Five essay and/or discussion questions (PDF and Google Slides)

➢ 10 Interactive Google Slides - you simply share the file with your students and they answer the questions on their computers. I have also included these files as PDFs.

➢ Students cannot lose their assignments - check your students' work in the revision history to see what they finished and when they finished it.

➢ I use Google Classroom for all of my assignments. I create the assignment in Google slides or as a Google doc - I post the assignment and Classroom makes a copy of the file (for each student) - they simply hit “turn in” when they are ready to submit. It’s accessible anywhere through Google Chrome. It is their own file with their name on it. They may also share the file with you or with other students when they are doing group work.

➢ The slides contain answer boxes that the students type in answers on their computers (everything is automatically saved in Google Drive) or the unit may be printed.

This unit allows for differentiated learning; some students may be more comfortable with the questions that focus on the lower levels of Bloom’s Taxonomy (remembering/ comprehension and simple applications/understanding), whereas other questions provide students the opportunity to focus on higher levels (analysis and evaluation).

The ELA Common Core State Standards require students to learn how to read texts carefully:

“As a natural outgrowth of meeting the charge to define college and career readiness, the Standards also lay out a vision of what it means to be a literate person in the twenty-first century. Indeed, the skills and understandings students are expected to demonstrate have wide applicability outside the classroom or workplace. Students who meet the Standards readily undertake the close, attentive reading that is at the heart of understanding and enjoying complex works of literature. They habitually perform the critical reading necessary to pick carefully through the staggering amount of information available today in print and digitally. They actively seek the wide, deep, and thoughtful engagement with high-quality literary and informational texts that builds knowledge, enlarges experience, and broadens worldviews. They reflexively demonstrate the cogent reasoning and use of evidence that is essential to both private deliberation and responsible citizenship in a democratic republic.
