FREE Shakespeare Theme Activity!
Determining theme and its development is central to Common Core literature skills. This activity enables students to determine themes commonly found in Shakespeare’s plays, then support their findings with evidence from the text. It is a useful lesson not only in analyzing Shakespeare’s works, but also in demonstrating to students the difference between theme, subject and summary—a differentiation with which they often struggle.
Then, because so much of our entertainment today has been influenced by the Bard, students connect these themes to modern-day entertainment in an optional extension activity. They choose a movie and a song that share one of the themes they have identified, then explain their reasoning, supporting with evidence.
Common Core Standards Covered
• CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.CCRA.R.1. Inference and Textual Evidence
