This lesson and guided notes is designed for use before students begin reading Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare.

The lesson provides information on Shakespeare's life, the Elizabethan era, Shakespearean theater, the three types of plays (comedy, tragedy, history) with a focus on tragedy, the tragic hero, catharsis, and some examples of common Shakespearean words.

The guided notes include blanks to keep students engaged as well as relevant images.
