Adding and subtracting fractions with unlike denominators can seem like an endless task to some fifth graders. There are so many steps and so many places along the way to make mistakes. I see this a lot in my small group intervention. So, I have created an awesome graphic organizer for students to use and follow the step-by-step instructions. This “shape method” can be used for adding and subtracting fractions with unlike denominators, simplifying fractions, and also creating equivalent fractions. I have created all 3 versions that help students practice and master these skills. There is an instruction page for each method and a completed example as well.
I hope your students enjoy using this and it makes these skills a little easier!!
