This lesson is intended for PreK-Kindergarten students to build and expand upon their knowledge of shapes. Instead of the usual method of showing the class a shape, pointing out its attributes and finally naming the shape, this series of lessons allows students discover the attribute of shapes and classify them on their own.
Prior to start these activities, it is extremely helpful to read books by photographer Tana Hoban. These books focus on finding shapes in everyday settings.
Lesson plans also include a letter to parents to explain the lesson and learning outcomes.
• Students will use digital cameras to take pictures of objects within the school and outside on the school grounds.
• Students will sort pictures based on the shapes that are in the picture.
• Students will create a collage of photos for a specific shape.
• Digital cameras
• Photo printer
• Sorting pockets (directions included on Day Two)
• Poster board
