I created this ws as a way to get students to think about shapes in terms of definitions so they can begin identifying shapes through classification. I have used this activity in many ways over the years: as a pre-assessment tool, as a whole group mini lesson, as a challenge/enrichment for individuals, as a summative tool, etc... I have created a shorter version (for fourth graders) and a longer version (for fifth graders).
I have even assigned this activity as homework as a unit pre-assessment, and then passed these back after assignment this same activity as a summative assessment so I could have the students compare & discuss their thinking behind their initial answers and their final answers--this brings about great class conversation!
