Sharing through the Season is a non-religious project for students
to complete in December as a fun way to share their traditions and favorite parts of the season with their classmates. This is a fun way for students to practice reading fluency, comprehension and reading aloud. It provides students with ownership of a projects. Yet it is simple enough that a student that may not have help at home can still complete it and be successful. This project can be done at home as a home project or within the classroom.
Students choose a picture book to share with the class. The book should be a seasonal book, holiday book or a favorite book. The students spend time practicing the book and completing a Story Map of the book and three questions to ask students while reading.
The next piece of the project is to create a souvenir for the class that goes with the story. It is a simple item that can be made by the student. For example: Read Gingerbread Man- pass out gingerbread cookies, read The Polar Express, provide each student with a small bell on a ribbon.
The project includes parent letter, project outline, story map, rubric.
