Looking for a fun and engaging game to get kids to practice reading long vowel words? Then Shark Attack is the game for your class!
How to play: Shuffle cards and place them face down on the playing mat (page 3). Take turns taking the card off the top of the deck. If you can read the card, you may keep it. If you cannot read the card, you must put it face down under the pile of cards. If you draw a SHARK ATTACK card, you must return as many cards as the number on the shark to the bottom of the pile. Play continues until one player gets at least 10 cards. I sometimes pick out the vowel we are currently working (for example, all Long A cards) and play the game using only those cards and one set of SHARK cards. When I do this, I have the first person to reach 5 cards win.
Includes: 1 game mat, 12 shark attack cards, 18 word cards for each vowel (90 words total).
The word cards practice the following vowel spelling combinations:
A: ay, ai, a_e
E: ee, ea, y at the end
I: i_e, igh, y at the end
O: oa, o_e, ow
U: u_e, ew, ue, ui
