PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

This is a packet created for a group of middle-school special education students reading The Arrival, comparing the immigrant experience of the protagonist with a primary source analysis of United States Public Health Service health reports on immigration. Each page in the packet analyzes a stage in the immigration process (line inspection, "chalking," separation of "passed" and "chalked" immigrants, and the interview examination). Each close reading section uses actual text from the report, and includes analysis of bias in the writing. The students felt good reading a medical report intended for adults on a middle-school level.
