Sheila Rae the Brave by Kevin Henkes is a story that is full of new and challenging vocabulary. We are so often looking for ways to help our students adopt higher level vocabulary into their repertoire and Kevin Henkes stories have inspired me in my language therapy groups to do just that. For this activity I start with a read aloud of the story, while I'm reading I am exaggerating the "big words" and writing them on a our large easel making them both visual and auditory. The after our story is finished, I ask the children to pick a word from the story and use it in a sentence "I am fearless" and for my older students "I am courageous when...". The writing activities that follow include a sentence started activity with illustration, a synonym activity and a character comparison sheet. This is my first submission to TPT so please leave me some feedback on how I can improve!
