This Word document provides directions and a rubric for assigning a Shield Project. Each student will create his or her own shield, using the epic elements of the hero’s good qualities, flaws, background and quest, using their own lives as material. In the end, the shield is a collage of the student’s life. Students also must have a “life motto” that is included as a banner.
On the other side of the sheet are directions and a rubric for a reflection paper. Students will choose one section of their shield and write a one-page reflection using one of the prompts provided. At the end of the document are photos of several completed shields that you can show your students for inspiration!
The document is in Word so that you can tweak the directions or rubric as needed. This project works well with King Arthur, the Iliad, the Odyssey, or any story involving the epic hero. This is one of my favorite projects to do with the students—it not only reinforces the elements of an epic hero, it lets me get to know the students a bit better!
