Shifts in verb tense is a common problem in student writing -- one that benefits from detailed lessons and repetition. To help my students shift their writing into the appropriate verb tense, I developed this series of three mini-lessons on verb tense shifts
that break down this concept into three key areas:
~ Verb tense shifts within sentences (such as when there is more than one verb)
~ Verb tense shifts between sentences (such as those that might occur between sentences of a paragraph)
~ Necessary verb tenses shifts (those that are okay because two events occur at different times).
In this zipped folder, you will receive the following:
A 39-slide Power Point lesson, divided into three mini-lessons, that...
~ presents the "rule" for each situation
~ gives five or more examples for you to use with students
~ includes a "teacher notes" page to explain how the PowerPoint works. I highly recommend you look at the Preview in Slide Show mode to see how it operates.
The sample slides loaded as pictures really don't do this PowerPoint justice!
A two-page PDF worksheet that can be used for practice or formative assessment.
An answer key is included.
The PowerPoint is designed to be used as three brief mini-lessons over three days; however, it can also be used as a one-day session that completely covers the concept. This product can provide direct support for ELA L.5.1d. Recognize and correct inappropriate shifts in verb tense.
