Summary: Marty Preston is an eleven year old boy living in the hills of West Virginia. When a beagle follows him home one day he believes that the dog has been mistreated and secretly makes a home for him on a hill behind his house. Ma and Dad eventually discover his secret and come to love Shiloh, but Dad insists that he be returned to his rightful owner, Judd Travers, a man who treats his hunting dogs badly. Marty finds a way to get around the laws and the hill country culture of minding your own business, and works for Judd to purchase Shiloh, coming to better understand both himself and Judd.
