Shin-chi’s Canoe, a picture book by Nicola Campbell, is a story about the Stolen Generation. Shi-shi-etko must return to Indian Residential School, along with her younger brother. This will be a yearly event for his family—including a period of mourning the children’s absence. Before he departs, he is given a tiny canoe as a symbol of hope and family.
Nicola Campbell’s, Shin-chi’s Canoe and Shi-shi-etko are beautifully written and illustrated books. Perfect stories to help build empathy, cultural awareness...and develop reading strategies.
I have provided instruction for teaching three Reading Strategies:
1. Questioning the Author--to build comprehension
2. Book or Passage Performance--to build fluency in young readers
3. Choice Reading and Book Selection--to build motivation to read more books
