Keeping our Navy safe is a tricky proposition in today’s world. Sonar and radar systems are designed to find ships, and if an enemy finds one, it could increase the danger for those onboard. A ship’s signature is a measurement of how visible it is on radar. Right angles in a ship’s design increase its signature because it is more identifiable as a manmade object. Every aspect of the ship is designed to avoid right angles.
In this 10 page document you will be given a mapping to the Content Standards, an outline for how to implement the project, 2 assignments and one project for students to use.
-- In “Avoiding Radar”, students will use a protractor to precisely measure angles. They must pay careful attention to 90 degree angles because these will show up on radar.
-- In “Stealth Navy”, students will evaluate four ship designs on their radar system. They must label every angle in the diagram with its measurement. If there are any right angles in the diagrams, then they cannot recommend the ship.
-- In “Ship Signature”, students will design their own ship that will include no right angles in the design. They must supply a top view and a side view.
