In this document, you will find a vocabulary list of forty words extracted from Jennifer Armstrong’s Shipwreck at the Bottom of the World. For each word, I provide definition(s), part(s) of speech, synonyms and antonyms (where applicable), and an example sentence. This is more than just a list of words! After the list, I provide two vocabulary assessments complete with answer keys and word banks. In each assessment, I have written a fill-in-the-blank sentence for every word of the unit as well as easier exercises, such as synonym-antonym identification.
HINT: Since differentiation is important, the teacher can offer a word bank to students with the understanding that should he or she use this option, he or she may not score above a certain percentage—I begin the year with an 85% ceiling and end with an 80% ceiling. Too, if the part of speech requirement is too challenging for some students, the teacher can differentiate and make it a requirement for those functioning further along on the continuum.
