Our favorite short story finally has a vocabulary unit! Use these activities and assessment to help familiarize your students to the vocabulary they will encounter in "The Lottery" by Shirley Jackson. This unit has been tested and approved in Lisa's middle school classes.

There are 4 activities in this unit: the first 3 activities are pre-reading activities to introduce the vocabulary to the students. The final is a 20 point assessment.

First, students will do a fun word find just to be exposed to the vocabulary. Download this word find for FREE here.

Second, students will do an activity where they will use context clues to find the meaning of each vocabulary word. The words are within short stories that students can relate to.

Third, students will apply what they have learned about each word and create sentences using each word. The fun part here is that students are encouraged to write sentence that relate to them or their lives, meaning much more interesting sentences to read AND students are more likely to remember the meanings.

Finally, there is an assessment to use after reading the story with the students. This is a 20 point assessment using the words in context from excerpts from The Lottery. It also asks students to use 5 words of their choice in sentences.
