The year is 1603 and the new shogun, Tokugawa Ieyasu, has required that your students, experienced samurai, create a training manual booklet for young samurai to study before they become expert and well-trained samurai. Students will take on the perspective of a trained and experienced adult samurai in 1603. The product includes directions for the cover page, introduction, pages of content and appendix, along with a rubric. The product also comes with 14 pages of booklet templates.

Help Wanted Ad: Samurai Needed

Students take on the role of a Japanese scribe to create a Help Wanted Ad to find qualified people to become samurai. The editable Word document includes a brief introduction explaining the activity, a list and explanation of requirements and a rubric. This helps students develop the skill of using historical evidence in their writing, along with incorporating their creative touches.

Primary Source Analysis: Creed of a Samurai

Students will read a primary source document that was written by an anonymous samurai in the 14th century. It is a fascinating poem that allows our students to understand the outlook, attitude and frame of mind of the samurai. Students will analyze the poem by answering questions and by writing their interpretation of chosen lines. Then, they'll create an "Illustrated Guide" by choosing four lines from the primary source to illustrate and to write the meaning in their own words. The product includes the primary source document, a glossary of challenging words, a handout that includes interpretation questions, an answer key, a direction sheet that explains the “Illustrated Guide” project and a rubric.

Writing Project: Samurai Cover Letter

The year is 1554 and Oda Nobunaga, Daimyo of Noguya Castle, is looking to hire an experienced, brave, fearless and responsible samurai. The task of your students is to assume the role of a samurai who is seeking a daimyo, also known as a warlord. Students write a cover letter convincing the daimyo to hire them for the position. The product includes an introduction, the help wanted ad that students will respond to, a cover letter template with specific directions and requirements and a rubric.

Debates: The Samurai Era

Classroom debates are a wonderful way for students to strengthen their skills in the areas of group work, public speaking, problem-solving and research. Divide your students into six groups. Two groups will compete against each other at a time for a total of three classroom debates. Three debate questions are provided, so each of the three debates are different. The product includes a brief introduction, three debate questions, five debate strategies, an explanation of the debate structure, three planning guides, a rubric and a ballot for voting.

Talk Show of Medieval Japan

Students will work in groups of four to present a talk show. Their talk show will include the host who will ask the deep and engaging questions and three guests who will answer in an interesting and detailed way. Students will choose three out of the following four people to include in their talk show: a Shogun, a Daimyo, a Samurai or a Peasant. (Traditional Japanese names are included.) The product includes an introduction, specific requirements, rubric and sample questions that the talk show host can ask, as well as a planning guide and editing checklist.

Create a Visual of Feudalism in Medieval Japan

Your students will work in small groups of three to create a visual that portrays the status, roles and responsibilities of the four social groups that made up feudalism in medieval Japan. Each group member will choose a role (professor, graphic designer or scribe). One of the best ways to learn about historical figures is by reading biographies. Your students are going to design the book jacket of Minamoto Yoritomo's biography. Minamoto Yoritomo was the first shogun and started a new era in Japanese history. A book jacket includes the front cover, spine and back cover of the book. This is a project that gives your students the opportunity to be creative, but their writing must be based on historical evidence. The product includes an explanation and list of specific requirements and topics plus a rubric.

Create a Board Game

This project is a really fun and creative way for students to show off what they learned about Feudal Japan, including the roles and responsibilities of the shogun, daimyo, samurai and peasants. Students will create the rules and directions for the game, create the required pieces, and create a colorful and detailed board game.
