Hello! Thank you for visiting my "Math Is Not Daunting" store!
This is a simple project for which students will write a word problem that describes an imaginary shopping spree. There are two versions and two examples included. You can choose to have students write their word problem, include a solution, and then have their partners solve their word problems. You can use a rubric to evaluate the quality of their word problems. You may edit the project in any way that you would like as it is attached as a Word document.
To solve the word problems, students will need to perform different operations with decimals, including multiplication, addition, and subtraction (with the second version). Therefore, this project correlates with 5.NBT.7, which is, as stated on the "corestandards" site: "Add, subtract, multiply, and divide decimals to hundredths, using concrete models or drawings and strategies based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction; relate the strategy to a written method and explain the reasoning used."
Thank you for your time!
