This is a one day middle school math activity that focuses on finding unit rates in order to compare two different rates. Students are going on a trip, but first they must go grocery shopping! They will use their knowledge or ratios and unit rates in order to save as much money as possible! This project could be done individually, in partners, or in small groups.
This document includes a page with useful tips, student worksheets, an answer key, and price tags that can be used for the project. You can choose if you want to set up the grocery store in your classroom or use activity without setting up the store. If you choose to set up your classroom as the store, this document DOES NOT include any of the actual products or any pictures depicting the different products.
This activity aligns perfectly with the 6th grade common core standards 6.RP.A.2 and 6.RP.A.3b.
