• Mystery Word Mats (2)
• Letter Cards (for Mystery Word Activity)
• Short A (CVC) Word Families Sentence Strips
• Short A (CVC) Word Family Readers (2 books)
Mystery Word Mats Directions:
•Print and laminate mystery word mats.
•Cut out letter cards (or, gather foam letters or other letter manipulatives).
•Give students just enough letters to make the words, plus three extra letters to make an additional word that follows the same pattern (this is the mystery word).
•Students lay out their letters to spell the words then, look at the remaining letters to guess the mystery word.
•If you choose, students can then practice writing the words and drawing a picture for each (if laminated, this can be done with dry erase markers).
Short A Word Families Sentence Strips Directions:
•Cut out sentence strips.
•Students read each sentence and identify/highlight the short A word family words (ran, mat, rat, etc).
•Or, to practice fluency, put the sentence strips on a ring and students and flip through reading each sentence.
Short A Word Family Readers

•Book #1 – Students read and complete the sentences with short A word family words using the pictures.
•Book #2 – Students read the sentences then, based on what they read, draw a picture for each page.
