In order to prepare my students for the New York State ELA test in the spring, I used data from the practice tests to determine the area they most needed to work on. Students needed practice with multiple choice questions, short answer questions, essay questions, or to simply raise their reading levels. Based on this information, they were assigned differentiated homework. For one or two days a week, students substituted their independent reading homework for one of these test-prep homework packets.
This product includes the five weeks of short answer practice. Students simply needed to read a passage, and answer the short answer questions fully and using evidence. Most of the students I put in this group either struggled not answering all parts of questions or with connecting their evidence to their answer.
Most of these passages came from ReadWorks (an excellent, free website for educators), although some of the questions I either wrote myself, or tweaked for my purposes. I included this bundle here for free for those of you who'd like to use it in conjunction with the essay and multiple choice question bundles that I'm also offering. All the passages are within the 6th grade range of text-complexity, and they may also be appropriate for 5th or 7th grade, depending on your students.
