As the English STAAR Test approaches, my classes are diving deeper into practicing for the short answer response portion of the test!
In an attempt to prepare my kids to the best of my ability, I have provided a checklist to aid them throughout the writing process.
The checklist is very simple, clean, and formatted into a half of a page. The items on the list include reminders about integrating quotations, transition words, an explanation of the answer, and more. Overall, this resource can be used with any method you have been teaching your students (ACE and APE, for instance).
On the top half of the page, the self assessment checklist is meant for a student to use on his/her own short answer response. This is the first step I ask my students to achieve after they write their response.
The checklist on the bottom half of the page is conducive to partner work. I require my students to get at least 2 classmates to read the response his/her friend wrote, grade it, and write feedback on the back of the checklist.
I made sure I covered all of the bases, plus some, in order for my kids to make a 3 on the STAAR short answer portion.
By the end of the activity, each student's short answer response has been checked over, revised, and edited at least 3 times before it reaches my desk. This resource has saved me time and, often, my sanity! I hope it will do the same for you!
