Discriminating between the short e and short i sounds is very difficult for my newly arrived ESL students. I developed this activity to give them practice and help build their vocabulary at the same time. I use the first page as signs which I glue to either side of clothes pins (word / picture) and then clip the pins onto the edge of a divided bowl. There are then 32 pictures, 16 short e and 16 short i, for the students to sort into the appropriate side of the bowl. The last page lists the words for teacher reference.
