Who said phonics can't be fun? I hope that your students enjoy this fun phonics word sort between the short "I" and the long "I" sounds! 10 words are provided (5 short “I” sounds, and five long “I” sounds). It is their job to determine the correct column to place the words in! I used the visual aids of ice cream (a long “I” word) and a popsicle (a short “I” word) to both give them engaging examples, and hopefully a lasting memory of the difference between the two sounds. You can start referring to short “I” sounds as “popsicle words!” and long “I” sounds as “ice cream words!” as they continue to practice these phonics words—my students loved these categories!
