I began getting really frustrated with linking my reading expectations to my writing and spelling expectations. Words Their Way gave me a better understanding of the developmental stages of spelling – but why do my PM Benchmark, DRA, and levelled books not match up? There’s too many words, including sight words, that are not within students’ phonetic knowledge – therefore, they’re not decodable!
I began using a few decodable readers that I found at my local thrift store with students instead. After reviewing short vowel and consonant sounds and manipulating them to make and read words, I gave them the decodable book and said “You know all the sounds in this book. Even if you don’t recognize the name or the word, you can sound it out using the skills we just practiced.” Smiles and sighs of relief!
The problem with many “decodable readers” is that they’re not really decodable at all. Yes, they contain target phonetic words – but they’re mixed in with words beyond the student’s developmental stage.
