Short Polished Responses, or SPRs, are weekly writing topics which students respond to formally in 250 words. Even though the responses are short, the expectations are high. Included are one page of instructions and the nine SPRs I assigned throughout the trimester. You would have to so some tweaking with dates and some of the topics.
I had students complete 5 of the 9 SPRs assigned to make a total of 100 points (20 points each). I liked SPRs because students could choose which they wanted to complete and most were able to improve their score each week because they would get quick feedback on the previous SPR.
Each week I would include a writing minilesson which they were assessed for in their SPR.
The SPRs are short enough that it doesn't take the teacher long to grade. At the same time, students are expected to turn in quality work. Win-Win situation!!
