This is a research project which takes about one week of class time to complete. It requires the student to complete an interview about his/her name (hopefully with a parent or guardian) and then research information from a "name book" and from a website. The only thing you'll need is to obtain a few name books. I offered extra credit for students who brought them in and never had trouble getting them. This MSWord document gives the student a place to write all of his/her research including the information he/she will need to complete a works cited.
Once the research is complete, the student is directed to "write a long paragraph (at least 8 sentences) explaining the meaning of your name and where it comes from. Remember the proper structure of a paragraph. Your paragraph should include:
a. a topic sentence providing the main idea
b. supporting sentences (the details to back up your main idea)
c. transitions between sentences
d. a conclusion (which wraps up the paragraph)"
This file contains a list of websites and a rubric for grading.. This is a fun project which my students hardly realized was research!
