PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Have you ever wondered what historical figures would say about today’s current events if they were still alive? Would Gandhi approve of the Occupy movement? Would Amelia Earhart fight funding cuts to the space program? Would Dr. King be taking on urban education?

Hook students into doing primary AND secondary research “in disguise”! In this project, students research biographical information about a famous person from the past to hypothesize what that person would likely say and do in regards to a current controversy. Then, students write an informal argumentative essay persuading the reader why their thesis about the person’s beliefs is not only plausible, but an extremely valid hypothesis.

Common Core-ready for any ELA or Social Studies class, this project can be conducted in as few as 3 days, depending on your expectations for the final product and how you assign class time vs. homework.

(Can this project work for grades 11 and 12 too? Absolutely. Intensify the project's expectations on this EDITABLE doc or keep them the same!)

This 3-page download includes:

Teacher’s Page, including essential questions, standards covered for Grades 6-8 and 9-10, suggestions for grading W.7 and W.8, and a link to an article for background reading (optional). This page also outlines the CCSS Literacy WHST Writing standards that make this project relevant for Social Studies.
Directions Page: introduce the project and hook students with clear directions
Rubric: Assesses CCSS writing standards; includes spaces for teacher feedback and self-assessment.
• Both the PDF and editable Word file are included
