Teach students how to purposefully use a short sentence for a particular effect in a piece of writing. This PPT lesson explains that authors use short sentences on purpose to highlight pivotal or dramatic moments in a piece of writing. This lesson contains a writing sample to highlight how to successfully use short sentences. Once we get students to start being active thinkers while writing, really putting some thought into varying sentence length for a reason, we are setting them up to be successful writers and thinkers over the long haul. This lesson is connected to the book, The Writing Diner, by Tim Hargis.
