This comprehensive short story analysis activity packet is ten pages plus an instructions sheet for the instructor. It is not designed for any particular story, but is designed to apply to any short story. It covers: setting, mood vs. tone, characterization, plot, theme and conflict. Throughout, students are required to cite specific text-based evidence to support their answers. In my classroom students used the blank packs each time we did a short story, and by the end of the unit, had a very strong packet of short story analyses. It is closely aligned with Common Core (specific standards referenced below). It comes with two vocabulary templates (one example and one blank) to help students preview vocabulary for the story, a five page analysis activity, and a three page reference sheet for students to use while completing the analysis. This activity is suitable for grades 7-12, though it is not suggested for struggling students in lower grades, or high performing students (honers, etc) at the higher grade levels.
