✅ BONUS #1 - Keyword Strategy with Step-by-Step Guide
Short story comprehension can be made easier with the Keyword Strategy. Students identify and use keywords in text segments to accelerate comprehension. This strategy works well because it
• Addresses literal, inferential, and evaluative comprehension
• Works especially well for students who may find the story challenging
• Produces a study guide that heightens long-term recall
Step-by-Step Example: To show you how the Keyword Strategy can work in your classroom we’ve included a bonus story, “Lamb to the Slaughter,” with the related Keyword Strategy instructional guide, a step-by-step example lesson, and an example student-annotation response.
✅ BONUS #2 – Quick Picture Strategy for Teaching Poetry
With the Quick Picture Strategy students generate quick images of ideas they produce in their minds. This process of personal creativity promotes associative recall; the students remember the significance of the drawing because no one is telling them what to draw. This is NOT your typical “draw a picture.”
Student Example: We've included a "Side-By-Side" Annotation Organizer for the complete Walt Whitman poem “O Captain! My Captain!,” along with the related Quick Picture Strategy student drawing and response sheet, and example student responses.
Short stories are a great way to improve reading comprehension, develop close reading skills, and generate an interest in classic literature.
