This resource introduces AP® English Literature and other upper level literature students to prose analysis of various short stories. This lesson, exploring 4.A – Identify and describe the narrator or speaker of a text, includes slideshow notes and a student handout with various excerpts. The excerpts include:

  • "Happy Endings" by Margaret Atwood
  • "The Body" by Stephen King
  • "Ruthless" by William de Mille
  • "The Cask of Amontillado" by Edgar Allan Poe
  • "The Secret of Life Walter Mitty" by James Thurber

The lesson continues with analysis of "EPICAC" by Kurt Vonnegut and an AP® Lit-style paragraph prompt of George Orwell's "Shooting an Elephant." Printable note sheets for the online AP® Daily videos are also included, and I suggest opening the lesson with these helpful videos.

In preparation for online learning, the lesson has also been converted to Google Slides for use in Google Classroom. The lesson comes with fillable text boxes for student work, plus instructions on how to make copies and use the resource on digital platforms.
